We’re learning how to be PROBLEM SOLVERS and TACKLING TROUBLE in reading, writing, math and our personal lives!
Reading- We are learning about and reading NON-FICTION books!
We are working on strategies to figure out tricky words:
READING STRATEGIES to figure out TRICK WORDS (and things you can reinforce at home!!!):
-stretch out the word
-break it! (break the word in 2)
-chunk it! (chunk sounds together)
-find a word within the word
-look around you (word walls, flashcards, books) to figure it out
-ask a friend
We are also working on fluency (reading smoothly and not like a robot!) and COMPREHENSION!
In order to be promoted to the second grade, the reading goal for each student is to achieve a level I, J, or K by the end of the school year.
***We are SUPER EXCITED to announce that we've been selected as a technology-grant recipient to incorporate more LITERACY activities in our classroom (http://www.innovationsforlearning.org/)!
Sight Words- Each student received a sight word list specific to their level to study both at school and at home. These are EXTREMELY important in helping them progress in their reading levels!!!
Fundations- We are working on letter sounds including digraphs, blends and glued sounds, tapping out words and writing full sentences.
Writing- We are working on our ALL ABOUT (non-fiction) books. We are exploring different jobs and animals!
We are also stressing writing mechanics:
-beginning a sentence with a capital letter
-ending our sentences with periods
-using spacing between words
We are a also rereading our work to make sure it makes sense [and fixing it when it doesn't!] and adding details.
Math- We are shapes as well as ordinal numbers (first, second, third...) numbers and position words (over, under, behind, right, left, etc.)
